Fly by Night Public Artwork

by Cristina Muñoz Brown on July 29, 2016

in EVENT,FINE ART

Just in case  you missed it, here are some stunning images from Duke Riley’s public artwork “Fly by Night”. We are completely mesmerized by the imagery and footage taken at this artful event in NYC! Who knew that pigeons rigged with LED lights could be so captivating!

Riley orchestrated a series of performances occurring regularly throughout late spring. At the call of a whistle, thousands of birds emerged from their home in a grand, converted historic boat docked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The pigeons circled above the river as the sun sets over Manhattan, and small leg bands, historically used to carry messages, were replaced with tiny LED lights, illuminating the sky in a transcendent union of public art and nature.

CURATORIAL STATEMENT

…Duke Riley’s Fly By Night brings the rock dove back to the forefront of the New York story once again, assembling an unprecedented fleet of specially trained birds that pay homage to the inhabitants of Cob Dock over 100 years later. Housed on a former naval aircraft carrier once used to train helicopter pilots, this new flight crew made up of Homers, Flights, Rollers, Tumblers, Tipplers, and even the ancient Syrian Damascene (the artist’s favorite), are Riley’s winged collaborators taking to the skies above Wallabout Bay. Twirling, swooping, and gliding – together, apart, and together again – Riley orchestrates an unpredictable flying composition. Like the birds themselves, no two performances are the same. Lacing together old New York and new, Fly By Night asks us to stop, watch, listen, and revere this extraordinary creature that has shared the triumphs and tragedies of the human experience – uniting individuals, cultures, and generations of fanciers in a tale of both the ancient and modern city.

Kentucky Derby Hats | Arturo Rios Collage

“What sets the Kentucky Derby apart from other sports and entertainment events? It’s the hats!”

Of course It’s the Hats…Especially hats with Feathers !!!!  Year after year, hat designer Arturo Rios puts out the best fascinators and millinery styles available, and with the Derby just about a month away we wanted to share our favorite Couture Designer Hats by Arturo Rios. The Derby is on May 6th and 7th and if you can’t go to the races in person, we encourage you to throw a derby party and watch the race live on NBC.

Kentucky Derby Hats | Arturo Rios Collage

“The extravagant hats that have become associated with the Kentucky Derby did not really come around until the 1960s, when social fashion norms loosened up and the presence of television gave women a reason to stand out. The hats became larger, brighter, and more extravagant.

Hats at the Kentucky Derby have become even more popular after the royal wedding in 2011, an event that showcased many elaborate hats and fascinators.”

Most impressive are Katniss’s costumes which are truly a work of art! Cinna’s “people” spent time with us here at The Feather Place Los Angeles to source and get inspiration as to what feather types they wanted to use on the costumes. We are so lucky to have behind the scenes “feather” knowledge on several blockbuster hits like this one!

Fashion Week SS16 Feather Round Up

Fashion Week SS16 Feather Round Up

Fashion Week SS16 feather round up was difficult for me to pick my favorite designers.  There was a mixture of unique feathered garments to admire… But if we have to pick a favorite collection I would have to go with Sophie Theallett.  She mixed sexy silhouette with a powerful slim fit golden suit embellished with bleached rooster coque tails that add a little drama. Sophie Theallet also uses goose biots in her collection, it adds little edge to a cocktail dress. You can clearly  see her love for Africa in this fun and energetic spring line up.

Comme Des Garcons, YDE, Givenchy and Nina Ricci favored ostrich in their spring lineup. Ostrich feathers always adds a feminine touch with a glamorous flow to a dress or gown. YDE mini dress is sassy with an elegant flow using ostrich fringe. Comme Des Garcons is very advant garde with ostrich feathers you see the influence of Bjorks Biophila tour, in my option which I love! Valentino used peacock flue in their African inspired collection of dresses crafted with color bands of raffia or the pleated goddess gowns, with peacock collars inspired by modern day Nubian queen. It just goes to show that you can always use feathers in any season for in any collection or influences.
