STAGE & SCREEN

Feather filled movie scenes like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance sequence in the movie Top Hat and Alicia Silverstone’s iconic marabou topped pen in Clueless, have had a way of captivating the silver screen over the generations. With the Academy Awards this weekend, we wanted to look back at 7 of our favorite feathered moments from the silver screen starting with Jasmine Guy’s nominated roaring 20’s feathered look in the movie Harlem Nights.

Harlem Nights’ Joe I. Tompkins was nominated for an Academy Award for best costume design and we can see why just by looking at this movie still of the lovely Jasmine Guy as Dominique La Rue. Of course we love the Ostrich Feather details used throughout the whole film! And while the movie is now a cult classic, the costume design is enough reason to re-watch this movie.

Black Swan, director Darren Aronofsky’s psychological thriller set in the world of professional ballet, is a stylish treat with Rodarte-designed ballet costumes, showcasing black feathers, Swarovski crystals and tulle. We loved it! These costumes were truly a work of art, they were put on display at The Museum of Contemporary Art in 2011.

This romantic, period-film has been the inspiration for countless “Great Gatsby” theme parties and feather fashion trends! 2013’s movie The Great Gatsby based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel and directed by Baz Luhrmann starred Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby also won an Academy Award for Best Costume Design. 12 of the original costumes designed by Miuccia Prada and Catherine Martin were also put on display in Paris and New York City.

With a pastel hued color palette inspired by french macaroons ; costume designer Milena Canonero also won an Oscar for Best Costume Design in the Sofia Coppola directed 2006 film Marie Antoinette. We like to play this movie on repeat at the Los Angeles showroom. We are really looking forward to seeing who will win this year and to see what the stars will be wearing.

Ursula Andress as Vesper Lynd embodies the Look of Love in the ultimate spy spoof of all time; Casino Royale 1967 . This movie is full of fun and witty feather filled movie scenes and wardrobe.

A true CLASSIC; Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the 1935 Top Hat “Cheek to Cheek” dance sequence is most inspiring! The graceful dance moves and flowing feathers truly captivated the audience over the generations! And that Ostrich Feather DRESS…! It’s Heaven!   Watch for yourselves below.

Did you know that “Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers hit their peak in Top Hat, and of the five dances in the film, ‘Cheek to Cheek’ has become symbolic of their on-screen symbiosis. The number was nearly ruined, however, by Rogers’ ostrich-trimmed dress, which shed tiny feathers as Astaire spun her around the dance-floor, spoiling his tails. Rogers was adamant the bias-cut gown she had designed with Bernard Newman was perfect for the role, but Sinatra wanted to switch it for a feather-less number. It was only when Rogers threatened to walk that he relented. It took a present to get Rogers back on set. “Dear Feathers, I love ya! Fred”, read the note to accompany a gold feather for her charm bracelet.”

“As if”… We could ever forget this iconic scene of Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz in the teen classic Clueless! Simple, yet memorable and so easy to DIY with Marabou Boas, Satin Ribbon and a Pen!

Feather Filled Movie Scenes

There were many Feather covered Grammy Performances & Red Carpet Moments this past Sunday.  It was a family affair for Pink on the red carpet! She looked fabulous in the gem toned Ostrich Feathered strapless gown! She later went on to say in an Instagram “I wore a custom Armani feather dress cause I’m FUN.” Little Big Town singer Karen Fairchild and Rachel Antoff also wore feathered frocks on the red carpet. Lady Gaga gave a memorable performance with her feather angel wing covered white piano. Our Ostrich and Marabou Feather Fans also made a cameo in the Rihanna & DJ Khaled ‘Wild Thoughts’ Performance. The 60th annual Grammy Awards was held on Sunday January 28th 2018 at Madison Square Gardens in New York City .

Hat's off to Hedda Hopper | The REAL Hedda Hopper

Hat’s off to Hedda Hopper !  Having recently watched FX Networks FEUD where scene after scene, Judy Davis’s character dons the most beauty feather hat, I was inspired to know more about the real Hedda Hopper and all of her hats!Hat's off to Hedda Hopper | Judy Davis as Hedda Hopper

“Judy Davis’ Hedda Hopper wears a succession of fantastic hats in “Feud,” which make for the most notable TV chapeaus of the year…

“Jack McConnell was a major milliner [of the era,] so we used a lot of his hats,” Eyrich says. “A bunch of our hats we got from a store here in Los Angeles called The Way We Wore. They have an amazing hat room that I had so much fun digging through.”

Murphy wanted hats with movement, so Eyrich added long, iridescent black feathers to one cap-like white hat. Another hat looks like an alien ship had landed on the wearer’s head.”Variety

Please tell us about the “First” feather accessory you made, where were you and where is that piece now?
I remember it was back in 2010 I just finished my first tour across the US, my husband Luke & I played 8 shows in 5 states. We started in New York and ended in LA, those 3 months on the road travelling through the states, really inspired me, it gave me a lot of ideas of how I wanted to visually look like on stage.
I couldn’t find what I was looking for to create that look, so I decided to have a go at making my own accessories and outfits….
I made a trip to the Feather Place in Downtown LA and met Cristina, it was her first day there and she is still there to this day.
She showed me through the whole range and I bought a load of feathers, at this stage not really knowing what I was going to do with them.
When I got back home to Sydney, I started to experiment. I discovered you could create incredible patterns by layering feathers on top of one another and I became obsessed..
The first thing I made was a beaded feather hair clip, they look very different to when I first started, they are a lot more detailed now.
I wore those same feathers everyday for about 4 years, until one day my Mum was helping organize my workshop and I walked in to see her taking apart my prized possession, the first feather clip I ever made. I was like “OMG! What are you doing??” She screamed and threw it in the air, “I thought this was just some old thing, it doesn’t look like anything you would have made.” I told her how it was sentimental and it was the first thing I made…She felt so bad…but it was actually the best thing to happen as now, I never keep anything, I sell everything and wear whatever is my latest design. It’s quite funny, now….

What inspires you when making a new piece?
Many things, some of my designs come to me in my dreams, I wake up with a mental picture of what I’m going to create.
Materials I am working with also inspire, I love shopping for materials, that’s when you get a good picture in your mind as to what you could create.
I get all excited when I have new colors, beads and materials to play around with. Being a musician I get inspired by other musicians and their fashion, I like to design things that I think, Keith Richards, Jim Morrison, Stevie Nicks or Johnny Depp might like to wear, chances are other people who like their style would like to wear them to.

Why use feathers…?
I come from a Maori background, which is native to New Zealand, feathers were worn to show status in the tribe as well as a spiritual purpose, much like Native American’s. Also growing up in the country in Perth, Western Australia, I had my own horse, I was always collecting fallen feathers and braiding them into my horses hair or in my own….
I had no idea that it would lead me to braiding and working with feathers everyday of my life, whilst building a successful fashion label.

Where can people find you?
My workshop has been based in Twickenham for the last 5 years, which is just outside of London in the UK. There are 4 of us in my home workshop hand making everything to keep up with the demand.
My husband runs our Camden Stall at Camden Lock Market, he is there every Weekend and some days during the week. I trade at the famous Portobello Market every Saturday, which is where I first started when I first moved to London. This is my one-day out of the workshop, so it’s quite a social day for me, I have lots of friends there.
Nearly all our U.S. customers, have found us on ETSY, also our online store is VERABLACK.COM. I am also available to do custom designs for whatever the occasion.

Sally LaPointe Frothy Feather Fashions

in FASHION,FEATHER TRENDS,STAGE & SCREEN

Sally LaPointe Frothy Feather Fashions from her S/S 2017 runway are among our favorite feather trends this year. Ostrich feathers and fringe always seems to be the most popular of feathers among fashion designers! Luxurious white, black and olive ostrich fringe, sheer fabrics and sparkling embellishments dominate this party-ready collection.

“As always, LaPointe delivered it all with a dose of sex appeal, from feather-embroidered bustiers to a body-hugging pink cashmere dress. On the more casual side, her black and white high-waisted denim styles, which laced all the way up the front of the leg, will be a surefire hit.”- wwd.com

“After Michael proposed to me and we started planning, we knew almost immediately we wanted a Halloween wedding,” Jordan said. “The ‘AHS’ thing came in once we chose our gorgeous Art Deco venue ― only to find out it was where they were filming ‘AHS: Hotel!’ That’s when we really went for it.”

Michael and Jordan who tied the knot last week on Oct. 29 at the historic Oviatt Penthouse in Downtown L.A  came to The Feather Place Los Angeles months in advance and with our help were able to make their wedding decor dreams come true! Using dark Teal Ostrich Plumes and Peacock Tails they created captivating feather centerpieces transforming their wedding venue into an art deco dreamland! We couldn’t be happier for these two!
